Adding Side Decks with SeaDek to a Single Rail Frame

We just finished a project we’re thinking others might find interesting.

A customer came to us with a 14’ Hyside and wanted to have side decks added to their 4-bay single rail frame. Hmmm…

After doing a little planning, we got to work.

For starters, since their frame was set up with a plastic hatch top over the front bay, we decided only 3 of the bays would need side decking.

The decks were cut from smooth aluminum plate, to which we added cut outs.

For attachment points & added rigidity, 1 ½” x 1/8” aluminum angle was then welded to portions of the edges of the aluminum plate.

After a test fit of the bare aluminum parts, SeaDek was applied.

Lastly, we used self-tapping screws to secure the decks into the side rails of the original frame.

In the end, the addition of the side decks with SeaDek undoubtedly improved this frame. The customer now has a safe & soft place to walk when loading the boat. They also have lots of options, cut outs, for easy rigging of gear and, to top it off, a flat surface to set down things like a map or a drink.

Awesome project! Thanks to the customer & thanks to Levi. We liked the results so much we’ll likely start offering this as a regular service. Contact us if you’re interested.
